HONIARA, SOLOMON ISLANDS, 18 SEPTEMBER 2013: The Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) with the support of sponsors National Fisheries Authority (NFA) of Papua New Guinea, Tri Marine International and Frabelle have launched a book of stories and art on the wonders of tuna.
Printed copies of the book of winning entries in the PNA World Tuna Day Art and Talent Quest were distributed at the Pacific Tuna Forum being held in Honiara this week to political and business leaders. The Pacific Tuna Forum 2013 opens today and closes tomorrow.

While the PNA Vessel Day Scheme had increased the value of the fishery from 1.9 to 3.8 million USD since 2010, Dr Aqorau said there were still gaps in implementation and understanding of Pacific governments, foreign fishing nations and industry that meant they had not maximized the benefits of the scheme.

PNA LEADERS MEET IN MAJURO TO DISCUSS KEY ECONOMIC ISSUES
MAJURO, MARSHALL ISLANDS, WEDNESDAY 4 SEPTEMBER: The Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) Leaders met today while being in Majuro for the Pacific Island Forum Leaders meetings.
Leaders were briefed on the PNA’s work to manage the world’s largest sustainable tuna purse seine fishery.

WEDNESDAY, 28 AUGUST 2013, TOKYO, JAPAN: The PNA Secretariat has presented a fresh proposal to stop overfishing of bigeye tuna in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean. The proposal also ensures that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) do not bear a disproportionate burden of conservation.
The draft Conservation and Management Measure was presented to a critical working group of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission being held this week in Tokyo, Japan.

In 2010, the amount of tuna caught was valued at USD 1.9 billion, with only USD 60 million of that going to PNA nations. By 2012, the overall value increased to over USD 3 billion, with revenue to PNA countries more than tripling to USD 229 million.
Papua New Guinea through the National Fisheries Authority continues to support the regional management initiatives of the PNA, most significant has been the introduction of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for sustainably caught free school skipjack tuna, and with the chain of custody certification recently received delivery can start.
